Description

The Telematic SD07X is a compact surge protection device designed for protecting industrial instrumentation, process I/O, control circuits, and communication-related signal wiring against transient overvoltage and surge currents.

The SD07X belongs to the Telematic SDX range and is the 7 V version. It uses a low-resistance protection design and is intended for applications such as thermocouples, RTDs, low-voltage analog circuits, 4–20 mA loops, shutdown systems, and fire & gas detection circuits. The current Eaton Crouse-Hinds/MTL documentation identifies SD07X as a 5 VAC / 7 VDC surge protector with DIN-rail mounting.

The “X” version is designed for use in hazardous-area applications when installed according to the applicable certification and system requirements. Historical Telematic documentation lists SD07X approvals for intrinsically safe applications, including EEx ia IIC T4 configurations.

🛠️ Operating Procedure & How to Use

⚠️ The SD07X is a protective device installed in an instrumentation circuit. Installation should be carried out by qualified electrical/instrumentation personnel.

🔌 Installation

  1. 🔎 Confirm that the circuit operating voltage is compatible with the 7 VDC / 5 VAC rating.
  2. 🧰 Install the SD07X on the appropriate 35 mm T-section DIN rail.
  3. 🔗 Connect the field-side signal wiring to the field terminals.
  4. 🔗 Connect the protected-side wiring toward the control-system equipment.
  5. ⏚ Connect the protective/earth path according to the installation design.
  6. 🔎 Check terminal polarity and wiring continuity.
  7. 📏 Keep the connection between the SPD and protective earth as short as practical.
  8. ⚡ Energize the circuit only after all wiring has been inspected.

The SD07X is intended to be installed between the field circuit and the protected instrumentation/control circuit, allowing transient energy to be diverted away from sensitive equipment.

⚡ Power-Up Sequence

The SD07X does not have its own conventional power switch. It remains installed in the signal circuit during normal operation.

  1. 🔧 Complete wiring inspection.
  2. 🔎 Verify the operating voltage.
  3. ⏚ Verify the protective-earth connection.
  4. 🔗 Check field and protected-side connections.
  5. ⚡ Energize the associated instrumentation circuit.
  6. 📊 Check the normal signal value.
  7. 🔎 Confirm that the protected PLC/DCS/measurement input operates normally.
  8. ✅ Leave the SD07X continuously installed during normal operation.

⛔ Power-Off / Maintenance Sequence

  1. 🚨 Place the associated process loop into the approved maintenance condition.
  2. 🛑 Isolate the signal/power circuit where required.
  3. 🔎 Verify that the circuit is de-energized before disconnecting wiring.
  4. 🧰 Remove the SD07X from the DIN rail if replacement is necessary.
  5. 🔧 Inspect the wiring and grounding.
  6. 🔄 Install the replacement SPD.
  7. 🔗 Reconnect field and protected-side wiring.
  8. ⚡ Restore the circuit.
  9. 📊 Verify the signal value.
  10. ✅ Return the loop to normal operation.

📖 Product Usage Instructions

The SD07X is normally installed close to the equipment or interface that requires surge protection. Typical applications include field instrumentation connected to control-system I/O.

For example, in a low-voltage analog or instrumentation circuit, the SD07X can be installed between the field device and the protected control-room equipment. When a transient occurs, the protection network limits the voltage reaching the sensitive instrumentation.

MTL documentation specifically identifies SD07X and SD16X as suitable for field protection of thermocouples and RTDs, while SDX products are also used with 4–20 mA loops, shutdown systems, and fire-and-gas detectors.

🏭 Typical Applications

🔹 Thermocouple circuits

🔹 RTD instrumentation

🔹 Low-voltage analog signals

🔹 4–20 mA process loops

🔹 Fire and gas detection circuits

🔹 Emergency shutdown systems

🔹 Process-control I/O

🔹 Industrial instrumentation

🔹 Field signal wiring

🔹 Control-system input protection

The SDX family is specifically described for THCs, 4–20 mA loops, shutdown systems, and fire-and-gas detectors.
